O’Neal Nips James in Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Series Hall of Fame Classic at Brownstown Speedway

BROWNSTOWN, INDIANA (August 7, 2021)– The Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Northern and Southern Series would make both tours only appearance of the 2021 season on Saturday evening at Brownstown Speedway in Brownstown, IN and Hudson O’Neal of Martinsville, IN would turn back a late race charge from Scott James to pick the $10,000 victory. This would be round eight of the Sunoco Race Fuels $10,000 Plus Challenge Mini-Series.

The victory by the 20 year old second generation driver would see O’Neal get his second career Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Series victory and second of the season and would come aboard the Double Down Motorsports owned Rocket Chassis powered by a Vic Hill Race Engine and carries sponsorship from Lazydays RV, O’Neal’s Salvage and Recycling, 2150 Enterprises, Smoky Mountain Speedway, Tarpy Trucking, Lucas Oil, VP Racing Fuels, WR1 SIM Chassis, Neubert Fabrication, and Earnhardt Technologies Group.

After a caution that flew as the field took the green flag and entered turn one as Jensen Ford spun in turn four, the second attempted start of the race would also see the caution fly for a multi-car tangle on the backchute. The third time would be the charm and Hudson O’Neal would take the race lead, with Tyler Erb, Spencer Hughes, Darrell Lanigan, and Scott James in pursuit. Scott James would work past Lanigan on lap two and would take third from Hughes two circuits later on lap four. Dustin Linville would also make his way into the top five and take fourth from Hughes on lap five. O’Neal would hold a steady lead at this point in the event, with Erb continuing to give chase. O’Neal would begin to work lapped traffic on lap twelve and this would allow Erb to close in on O’Neal, however, the caution would be displayed on lap fifteen as Jason Jameson would slow in turn four with a flat left-rear tire and he would go to the work area and get changed and return. O’Neal would maintain the lead on the restart, with Erb, James, Linville, and Hughes in tow. Hughes would drive past Linville on lap sixteen for the fourth spot and continue to charge the outside of the track and grab third from James on lap twenty. O’Neal and Erb would distance themselves from the pack at this point, while Devin Gilpin began to charge the high-side of the racing surface and would make his way into the top five on lap twenty-two.

O’Neal would again start working past slower lapped traffic on lap twenty-five, with James battling with Hughes for the third position and grabbing the spot on lap twenty-six. Gilpin and Lanigan would now go at it for the fifth position and Lanigan would grab the spot on lap thirty-one and take fourth from Hughes one tour later. Hughes and Linville would battle for the fifth position at this point until the pair spun over the banking in turns three and four to draw the caution, with Linville finished for the event. O’Neal would again maintain the lead on the restart, with Erb second, while Gilpin would rimride the outside and go to third on lap thirty-seven and take second from Erb on lap thirty-eight. With O’Neal maintaining a comfortable advantage, Erb, James, and Lanigan would get after for the third spot, with the trio entering turn one three-wide, with contact resulting between the cars, but all three would drive on. James would come out with the third position from this battle and would close in on Gilpin for second as O’Neal would again start working slower traffic. James would work past Gilpin for second on lap forty-five and begin to mount a charge on O’Neal. As the field saw the white flag and worked the final lap, James would close in on O’Neal and look to the bottom of the leader in turns three and four, but his charge would come up 0.126 seconds short as O’Neal would hold James for the victory, with Gilpin settling for third. Lanigan and Joe Godsey would complete the top five. The remainder of the top ten finishers would be Steve Casebolt, Kent Robinson, David Webb, Dustin Nobbe, and Mike Marlar.
