Wet Forecast Halts Valvoline Iron-Man Series Visit to Fort Payne on April 29

FORT PAYNE, AL (April 26, 2023)—Officials with the Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Series and Fort Payne (AL) Motor Speedway have mutually agreed to cancel the Super Late Model portion of the Marvin Ford Classic scheduled for April 29th. The event will be back on the 2024 schedule. The series does return to Fort Payne for the Road to Dega 40 in August.

After looking at different forecasts of small to moderate chances of rain and with drivers having to travel from multiple states to get there, fuel costs etc., officials felt it best to cancel the Super Late Model portion of the program. Also, saturated grounds from Wednesday and forecasted Thursday rains have promoted the cancellation. However, the track plans to move the UCRA Crate portion of the Marvin Ford Classic to Saturday April 29 instead of Friday April 28 weather permitting. For more information, please call JT Seawright at (256) 717-9338 or check the track’s Facebook page.

“We have wanted to race since February but the weather hasn’t allowed, now postponing or cancelling events has pushed our schedule back but we’ll be ready once the weather breaks,” stated Iron-Man Racing Series Promoter Chris Tilley. Cancelations since February include Fort Payne February 25, March 24-25 at Volunteer Speedway, April 8 at Tazewell Speedway and April 21 at Ponderosa Speedway.

The Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Southern Series will now open the 2023 campaign as part of a triple-header Memorial Day Weekend on Friday May 26 at Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, Ky. as part of the Bobby Carrier Sr. Tribute event paying $7,500-to-win, then traveling to Lake Cumberland Speedway in Burnside, Ky. on Saturday May 27 for the $7,531-to-win Johnny Wheeler Memorial then the Melvin Corum Memorial on Sunday May 28 at Tazewell (Tenn.) Speedway paying $5,001-to-win. The 2023 Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Southern Series Champion receives $20,000 plus DIRTcar points fund monies at the end of the season. Dates could be added to the 2023 calendar.
